Found Some More Catholic Anime!

The last ones seemed to be well received (*insert winking smiley face here*), and I had more pictures to post, so here we go!

Some day, I should really put up a blog roll or something, so the links I use all the time will be permanently on the right side of my blog. That might be handy. I dunno. Anyway. On to the pictures!

There's actually a book by Louis de Wohl based on the life of St. Francis Xavier, who was, of course, one of St. Ignatius of Loyola's first disciples and so one of the first members of the Jesuit Order, the Societas Jesu. All Jesuits have the initials 'S.J.' after their names. Conveniently, the English translation works, too: 'Society of Jesus'. Our present Holy Father, Pope Francis, is a Jesuit.

Anyway, the name of the book is Set All Afire and is based off of this quote. In fact, this quote is said to St. Francis Xavier as he leaves for the Orient.

I loved that book. It was my favorite book of all time for the longest. And then I discovered The Lord of the Rings, and, well...

Louis de Wohl actually wrote many novels about different saints throughout church history. Set All Afire is one of the better ones, since it doesn't have a parallel main character to contend with. In most of his books, Louis de Wohl has two main chracters: the saint, and another fictional character who moves in the secular/political world, acting both as a foil for the saint and in order to explain the world in which the saint lived.

Now, this can be a good thing or a bad thing. I really, really liked the parallel character in The Quiet Light, which is about St. Thomas Aquinas. He was an English knight named Sir Piers Rudde and he was all sorts of awesome. He also shared the story equally with St. Thomas.

However, in The Joyful Beggar and in The Citadel of God, which are about St. Francis of Assisi (whose feast day is tomorrow, yay!) and about St. Benedict, respectively, the parallel characters overshadowed the saints and sort of dominated the story. And neither one of those parallel characters were nearly as likeable or awesome, while the saints were awesome. So those two books were a bit of a letdown in that respect.

The Last Crusader, which is about Don Juan of Austria (no connection to the figure of romantic tales), was a return to awesomeness on the other hand. He was his own parallel character, so the undivided focus of the narration on him greatly improved it. That book should really be read with Lepanto, by G. K. Chesterton. Same story, both retellings wonderful.

This picture cracked me up. It reminds me of the meme in the Fire Emblem fandom: NUNS WITH AXES. (Long story cut short: the cleric units in that series of games are usually helpless. The most recent game gave them the ability to carry axes. Much awesomeness and hilarity ensued.)

I have never seen a nun with such weaponry, however... Spears, swords, daggers, halberds... is that a warhammer in the background? O.o Please give it back to Dwalin, Sister Mary Whatever. And a morningstar... oh, goodness. They really looted the armory, didn't they?
It's probably from some anime where the Catholics fight zombies or vampires. I find it really amusing that the secular world implicitly acknowledges like this that we are the best equipped to deal with spawn of the netherworld. XD

Okay, not anime. It was on Catholic Gag. But I had to share it anyway! Don't worry, I have another Catholic anime coming up. But it's the best one, so I'm saving it for last. XD In the meanwhile, have this:

I had never realized how much meme potential the Popes have until I found these websites. And it's not even the first Pope pic I've found with this caption, although my other one is in Latin (which, actually, makes it kind of funnier).

Oh, and one other before we return to Catholic anime (but it's funny, I promise):

I had honestly never thought of that before. Now I will think of it every time. XD Gee, thanks, Catholic Gag. That's another Gospel reading where I must try not to crack up inappropriately while Father is at the lectern.

I already have problems maintaining a straight face through the part about being cast into Hell, where there shall be "wailing and gnashing of teeth" (it's a bit of a family joke). Also, any time the psalm where the wife is compared to "a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home" and the children are "like olive plants around your table"... yeah... I lose it. It just provides such hilarious mental imagery...

I think this sums up anyone's reaction to the slow pace of a Takahashi romance. Even I (who am not usually in the shipping camp) was like, "Come ON already!"

But I guess it's worth it and all that.

I still cannot pronounce 'Sesshomaru' for the life of me, though. That reminds me, I need to go watch his whole Bakusaiga kablam. Because that is pure awesome. He gets stabbed in the heart. It just makes him angry. XD

And now, time for my favorite of the Catholic anime memes. Drumroll, please!

*rolls on floor laughing hysterically*

Yami Yugi FOR THE WIN! A combination of The Exorcist and Yu-Gi-Oh, combining for a pic that is definitely being saved. Actually, I think Yami is doing his whole 'Mind Crush' thing here, which makes it even funnier - he's shattering Kaiba's soul and removing the darkness from it. (Don't worry, Kaiba gets better... for a certain value of 'better') So, in a sense, he is doing an exorcism, or at least his Ancient Egyptian version of it.

That, or he's just finishing a duel with his standard, "Dark Magician, Dark Magic Attack!" It's really cool when Dark Magician attacks. Everything goes all photonegative and the enemy gets blasted away at the speed of light. XD

I like Dark Magician. He's cool. And kind of cute, but you didn't hear me say that. Actually, I think my last lab notebook somewhere has lots of doodles where I wrote all the permutations of Dark Magician in runes on unused sheets of paper. So that means... yeah... it's been a year and a half since I've discovered Yu-Gi-OH.

Too many fandoms. Too little time. Gah.

A Collection of Humorous Trivia

...Obviously, I've trawled the depths of FailBlog once again...

If Bilbo had attempted to explain what had happened to him when he was separated from the rest of the Company. Yeah... in hindsight, he was better off not even trying.

Oh, 'The Trouble with Tribbles'. I really need to find this one and watch it. The set people purposely kept dumping more and more Tribbles on Kirk/William Shatner, since they were sick and tired of his full-of-himself attitude. I've seen the clip. They just keep falling on him. And then a final Tribble falls down and hits him on the head. LOL.

How can you not tell the difference? Spock has pointy ears, for crying out loud, and Kirk doesn't!

Somebody who works at this story has a sense of humor, is all I can say. XD

I especially like the shark balloon. XD The glasses are a nice touch, as well.

Oh, definitely.

Considering our experiences with an iMac, I'll stick with WALL-E, thank you very much.

Ooh, Look, Funny Gifs

I had a lot of stuff to post today, okay? Now it is time for some gifs.

I am not a brony (or are only guys called bronies? I'm not sure) but, even so, this gif is applicable to a wide variety of situations, especially in my case. I get guilted into stuff a lot.

(By the way, have you seen The Avengers outtake where the Hulk guy says that and runs away? It's hilarious!)

Okay, this guy is a real-life ninja. Because I certainly would not want to take a running a leap and smash, even feet-first, through glass. And does he just perform a backwards somersault off the car hood (which may be quite hot)? YES.

I don't know why. I just felt my blog needed this gif on it. I have a lot of '(Insert Character Here) Approves' gifs by now. Lessee...

I have (1) Bofur Approves (2) Gandalf Approves (3) and now Snape Approves. I also have Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage giving the camera the thumbs-up and a gif of Legolas that could easily be captioned 'Legolas Approves', if I knew how to add captions. So that sort of makes 5. Right?

This one needs no excuse. It's just funny. Although I have no clue what that green tirangle above Tony's head means. Obviously, I am not a comic book nerd. (Therefore, I must be a poser, blah, blah, blah. Whatever.)

Really? Balloons? What do they have against poor, innocent balloons? This is very hateful and discriminatory of this museum. I think a protest needs to be staged.

A Glorious Mishmash of Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Some Other Stuff

Yes, the Other Stuff is important and must be billed. Or, in other words, I have found the geek section of FailBlog and am now supplementing my fandoms with funny pictures and other good stuff. Heaven knows I do not need to get on Tumblr. It's a black hole, filled with captions. I do not need to go there...

Does the light side have chocolate chip cookies? That's the most important question.

This is LEGO's and so it is automatically adorable. (How is Darth Vader held up?? With invisible tape???)

I do not remember him from Goblet of Fire. Granted, I watched that movie all of one time and probably had no idea who David Tennant was at that time. But now I know the rest of the story and can appreciate this.

I also have that gif of the Doctor from which that last picture is taken. :)

Now I will think of this every time. HEADCANON ACCEPTED!

It has a point. (Are the two second-from-the-right pictures from Game of Thrones? The guy on the bottom looks vaguely familiar and I can think of nothing else.)

R2D2 appears in Star Trek Into Darkness. Betcha didn't know that, did you?

This explains everything. Grumpy Cat has millions of clones and they inhabit the Daleks.

Incidentally, our paper ran a short article on Grumpy Cat today. Apparently, her real name is Tardar Sauce (sic) and she is now advertising for Purina. Or something like that. I was astonished that they had actually found the real Grumpy Cat, but also weirdly delighted. Yay Grumpy Cat!

At first I was inclined to be offended, and then I saw, "EXCOMMUNICATE," and started giggling. Catholics do have the best sense of humor.

I'm also surprised that the 'cardinal' Daleks are wearing birettas. I'm even more surprised that the 'pope' Dalek is not wearing the three-layered tiara, but rather an ordinary (if white and bejeweled) miter. Go figure.

Mishmashes of music with any of my favorite fandoms are always acceptable. However, just know that '9/8' and '7/8' are not actually called compound time and complex time. They're generally called... just '9/8' and '7/8' time. Surprise, surprise.

Still laughing hysterically over this one. I have such a weird sense of humor. I am also one of those weird people who laugh instead of groaning at bad puns...

Who Else Feels Better After Some Random Pictures?

I do. It helps. De-stressing in non-destructive ways is a good thing. I am a firm believer in humor as a de-stressing technique. Funny pictures constitute humor. Therefore, funny pictures are a good de-stressing technique.

There. My logic is infallible. XD

Let's start with some squirrels.

 

 

 

 

I wish I had that teacher.

 

Actually, I did have two chemistry teachers my second semester who were that awesome. (To demonstrate, the Friday before spring break, when about 12 out of the 72 people in the class showed up, my teacher for lecture took us outside to the courtyard and we SET BALLOONS ON FIRE.) In fact, their combined awesomeness is pretty much the reason why I changed my major to chemistry.

 

Of course, I do not have either of them now. :( And one of them is retiring after this year. His awesomeness shall be deeply missed.

 

 

Tony Stark/Iron Man would also make an awesome teacher, although I'm not sure what exactly we would be learning or how much of it we would learn. I doubt we would become experts in thermonuclear astrophysics overnight. But perhaps we could take a few basic classes, like Electronics 101, Building Power Suits In Caves Out Of Scraps 201, and Sarcastic One-Liners 211.

 

And awesomeness would be had by all.

Is this proof that software designers actually do have a sense of humor, buried deep underneath the strata of sadism that compels them to design computers the way they do? Perhaps we shall never know for sure.

Now this is a teacher with a sense of humor. Gotta love those teachers. They're always my favorites, even when they go an assign a huge paper for you to work on while you're trying to study other subjects for tests and the like...

This is very true. The desks that you have to swivel up and over to write on them are especially annoying, particuarly when they have different mechanisms from building to building. You couldn't just buy one type of this desk?

And now we know how raisins are made. The little men - ant-men? miniature gnomes? What are we to call this diminutive folk? - take out their equally tiny compressors and squeze all the uice out of the grapes. Where the juice goes, I do not know. Perhaps they siphon it away to feed their dying civilization underneath the counter? Perhaps they are merely paid to do this?

 

It is fascinating to consider the possibilities.

 

 

 

Well, there are. Sort of. It's just they don't apply all the time, so they might as well not even exist.

 

Gah.

 

And don't even get me started on our alphabet or our spelling. It's atrocious. I'm really glad English is my native language because I would never want to learn it otherwise!!!!

 

 

 

Oh, yikes. Do people think toilets are magical garbage disposal units and that they can just flush everything down it with no ill effect? The mind boggles...

 

I pity those poor plumbers who had to deal with this stuff!
