Smaug, Sherlock, & Pterosaurs

So, guess who got a DVD copy of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug yesterday.

So I decided to continue my "Nerd Problems" series in honor of Smaug.

Confession time: I did not actually think those exact words when I first saw Smaug. Actually, I thought this: "Oh my gosh! He looks like an azhdarchid pterosaur! AWESOME!!!"

The better-informed nerd paleontologist afficiandoes on TVTropes, however, have stated that Smaug's body design is more reminiscent of an ornithocheiroid pterosaur, so I will follow their lead. Nevertheless, 'azhdarchid' is an infinitely cooler word than 'ornithocheiroid'. The Persian word for 'dragon' beats the Greek for 'bird hand' any day. Also, Quetzalcoatlus northropi is an azhdarchid, which makes that genus 20% more awesome.

Also, I found this highly amusing picture while looking up large pterosaurs:

That's right. Some artist seriously took the time to compare Arambourgiania philadelphiae to Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes, of Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Seriously. They even drew his purple scarf! I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw it. "Surely not," I thought. "They wouldn't actually put Sherlock in a pterosaur diagram."

Nevertheless, I clicked on the image to enlarge it. Sure enough, it was Sherlock. I immediately knew I had to blog it. (Don't believe me? Go to the Wikipedia article.)

Since I've seen so many fanart of Smaug wearing Sherlock's purple scarf, it seemed only appropriate that these pictures should end up in the same post together.

Also, they are not 'pterodactyls'. That refers only to the members of one specific type of pterosaur. The name for all prehistoric flying reptiles is pterosaur - Greek for 'winged reptile'. Get your facts straight, people.

Yes, it bothers me every time I see 'pterodactyl' misused now.

Sherlock Is Coming!

Okay, I may have just found that gif and was dying to use it. (I'm longing for the day on the TORn forums when I can yell, "Troll! Troll in the dungeon!") But there really is Sherlock news.

A 30 second trailer came out Saturday. 80% of it may be John's horrible new caterpillar moustache, but it's a trailer! Everything else may have happened before it comes, but season 3 is coming!

And John's reaction will probably be something like this:

*crosses fingers*

Multi-Fandom Funnies

No, they absolutely have no idea.

In other words, you could make the argument that we Ringers had to wait ten years for another movie. Also, after There And Back Again, there will likely BE no more Tolkien movies.

Let that sink in. And now let the bawling begin. *sniff*

This explains everything!

Can. Not. Stop. Laughing. XD This is perfect, perfect, PERFECT! Brilliant use of Photoshop (or whatever program). And now I want a cookie... hmm...

In other news, I'm having problems finding Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Grr. It looks like I may be returning to the original anime sub for a while yet... at least until Maes Hughes dies. *sobs uncontrollably* I love Maes so much. He's just awesome.

Why is it that whenever someone is adorable and loveable in Fullmetal Alchemist that something bad immediately happens to them? Gaaaah. Found FMAB episode 4 (in English) yesterday and watched it. It was the Nina & Alexander one.

So. Much. Nightmare. Fuel. So. Many. Feels. Gaaaah.

I think this is one of those fandoms where, after a while, you start to wonder if it's bad for your emotional well-being. Ah, well, I have plenty of those already. *coughTolkiencough* *coughPercyJacksoncough*

Sometimes I Feel Like Mycroft

So, it's been raining lately. Instead of the little black umbrella that fits in my backpack, I decided one day to carry a large one without the collapsing handle. It was very useful in the rain with its greater amount of coverage.

And then I went inside... and had to carry it, folded up. It has a long metal point on the end that clicks when you tap it on the pavement. And I DARE you to walk with an umbrella and not tap it ominously on the pavement as you walk.

I felt like Mycroft Holmes.

I felt like making random deductions and ordering minions around.

I need to carry that umbrella around again more often, obviously. XD The feeling of power was a nice feeling... Muahahahaha.

In the meanwhile, I also resemble Mycroft in other ways:

This is a common reaction to stupidity around me.

This is another common reaction. Which leads to:

My brother and I appear to be the only ones to consider this funny, as we quote it a lot. Everyone else ignores us. That is probably the proper response.

The only problem with me being Mycroft is that I'm not into politics. Hmm. Ah, well. Cake... lovely cake...

An Admission

Okay, okay, you win, Internet. Especially you, Tumblr.

I give up. I admit defeat. I have caved in to the enormous pressure of your pictures and gifs, your video clips and constant barrage of fangirl propaganda.

I ADMIT IT! BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH IS NOT AS UNATTRACTIVE AS I FIRST DEEMED HIM WHEN I JOINED THIS FANDOM! THERE! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW??

*goes off to try and regain sanity*

P. S. I still prefer John Watson.

Multifandom Funny Stuff

Is 'multifandom' even a word? ...Hmm. I doubt it. Well, I have just coined it. Feel free to use it now as you like.

Not sure what the platypus has to do with anything... At least I can confidently identify the Doctor, the Supernatural crew, and (of course) John and Sherlock. I even know that it is the Tenth Doctor. Haven't I learned so much, Amy?

And it is all your fault. XD

Now, presenting: If Sherlock Went To Hogwarts

For some reason I can't get the picture to enlarge. Well. The source appears to be yourpotterlock on Tumblr but I cannot say for sure as Internet Explorer has decided to not let me open any new tab. It's rather cruel that way.

All you need is something about playing Solitaire on there and you will have me in a nutshell. Okay, I don't cry that much. But it gets there.

Martin Freeman dancing in Buckingham Palace, apparently.

And now presenting:

| Sherlock's disregard for furniture is wonderful.

| | Wait, this is not normal? I thought this was how everyone used furniture.

| | | THE FLOOR IS LAVA, JOHN.

I don't even know what I am doing anymore here.

Random Stuff

I am allowed to post random stuff. Random pictures, that is.

I really don't do many text posts anymore, but in my defense summer is really uneventful and I like it that way.

So, random pictures it is.

For you Avengers/Doctor Who fans:

Loki the Tardis

Now that your minds are blown...

...they are extra blown.

This should prove to my sister why I need a red plaid shirt. I mean, duh.

All my favorites, too.

And so apparently someone on Tumblr said they needed to post the weirdest things they had to scare off Yahoo. They then added: "I'm looking at you, Sherlock fandom."

Weirdness most definitely ensued.

I only post the tame stuff:

Oh... my... goodness... Sherlock fans, you have too much time on your hands. Far too much.

That is Lestrade, isn't it? It would be so embarrassing if I were wrong...

And then, for Harry Potter fans:

Now, while the pictures are funny in themselves, what is even funnier is the comments I found on them:

| So here you see two photos of Emma and Rupert displaying elegance and serenity—and then there’s Dan. "I HAVE A BRANCH ON FIRE! I’m not Daniel! I AM HARRY POTTER!

| | i don’t know what makes me laugh more the comment or the photo.

| | | On the bright side, Dan is not on fire.

| | | | did u just go there

| | | | | DAN IS NOT ON FIRE.

The comments make everything better. XD
