GKC + Tolkien = Win

Two of my top three favorite authors combined! How could this get any more awesome?

Come to think of it, G. K. Chesterton does show up in Toward the Gleam, a book that takes the, "What if Tolkien really did find a copy of the Red Book and translated LOTR, and there was someone out to get it from him?" approach. The book is all sorts of awesome, and it's fun guessing at who the famous people are when you don't have their last names to work with. Gilbert was a bit of a giveaway, though (and I was so glad to see him). Jack was C. S. Lewis, of course. Yeah, it was awesome.

The animated version of The Hobbit is considered by some to be the best adaptation of it. Obviously, I am not one of those people. I think, were I to watch it all the way through again (I saw it once in like... third grade), it would give me nightmares. I'm not fond of their animation decisions, and the Dwarves are... well...

Um, you just go look it up yourself. Yikes.

Fun fact: The animation studio that did it was later re-named Studio Ghibli. Yes, that Ghibli.

Let Me See Redemption Win

I found this incredibly beautiful and symbolic painting of the Redemption on Tumblr, although I can't seem to find who painted it.

It reminds me of a song I've heard several times on the radio now:

"Let me see redemption win / Let me know the struggle ends / Because You can mend a heart that's frail and torn / Because I'm worn."

The Redemption, the ultimate purpose of the Incarnation and the Nativity, is a good thing to remember and reflect upon as we head into Advent.

Tangled Headcanon Accepted!

I found this on Tumblr and though it was too good not to share:

| I have a headcanon that the Queen from Tangled is a huge bookworm like her daughter Rapunzel and that books are (or were) her escape. For eighteen years, her books distracted her from the pain of losing her only child.

Air New Zealand Strikes Again!

WATCH IT. Seriously, you must watch it. It's just as funny as their 'An Unexpected Briefing' in-flight safety video from last year. If you remember, that one had a cameo by Peter Jackson.

This time, look for Dean O'Gorman, a native Kiwi, being... well, himself in this video. Also, there's narration by Sylvester McCoy (a.k.a., Radagast) at the end.

Apparently, one also does not simply walk into Mordor. One takes flight NZ8233, gate 43. XD

The Ultimate Showdown

Ahahaha. The Pope versus Thor. Who do you think would win? This reminds me of the questions someone keeps posing on TORn, asking who would win in a fight between Gandalf and various members of the Avengers (i.e., Thor, the Hulk, Spider-Man, etc.). I loyally voted for Gandalf each time.

In a similar vein, I shall vote for the Pope this time as well. Sorry, Thor. XP

A Minor Thor Interruption (With Bonus Tony)

Even Robert Downey, Jr., has lost the ability to distinguish between himself and Tony Stark. It isn't just the Internet anymore. Either that, or he just doesn't care. It's probably both.

Is there a single member of the Avengers cast the Internet does not love? Tom Hiddleston seems to be a universal favorite, however.

I still have not seen Thor: The Dark World. I've seen several people say that the plot is so-so (generic dark elf sorcerer who has spaceships a la Star Wars and wants to destroy the world), but that the interactions between Thor and Loki are brilliant. Also, someone apparently dies, and it's not the someone I wanted to die. *snaps fingers* It's actually someone I didn't want to die.

*shakes fist at Marvel* Stop ruining Norse mythology!

Ah, well. Let's see what Rick Riordan makes of it in a few years. *rubs hands gleefully*

This is interesting. Take a gander.

Technically, spiders are arachnids, not insects, but they also breathe through spiracles in their exoskeletons so the same principle applies.

On a lighter note:

I have finally realized that room temperature in Celsius is about 20 degrees. Boiling water (which in Fahrenheit is about 212 degrees) is 100 in Celsius. As for Kelvins... phew... just take the Celsius temperature and add 473. No kidding. Kelvin was designed so that you could never reach absolute zero. It is the ultimate scale for temperature.

Yeah, America. We just like having weird measurements. I still can't tell you about how much a meter is, despite the fact that I have been using it almost exclusively in physics and chemistry for... oh... five years now.

Oops.
